CAFES

Cafes are wonderful gathering places to observe small but significant acts of kindness. Walking to one of my favourite Raglan cafes I noted a customer sweeping the footpath outside and another time a different customer was helping put the chairs out. Hang around long enough in a cafe and you may well see someone caring for others.
A couple of my older friends were in a nearby cafe. On my arrival, I noticed the cafe owner close the door of the cafe so a cold draft wouldn’t go on them. Such a thoughtful thing to do. The owner of the cafe then went away and got a lap blanket as well.
A young couple at a Mount Maunganui cafe gave up their seats for my wife Val, me and our daughter Ruth. How kind.
My twin brother Chris was impressed by the actions of a manageress of a New Plymouth cafe when an elderly customer had a coughing fit. No fuss was made and as a result the customer’s dignity and self esteem remained intact.
As I’m writing this blog post a customer needed the charging point on the wall next to me. She asked me if I wouldn’t mind moving to another table. Not a problem. An excellent way of me ‘practising what I preach’ when it comes to looking after people. While you’re in a cafe, perhaps make a point of greeting a customer that sits next to or near you. If a conversation follows an opportunity may arise to learn something new and find out how much you have in common. In my experience, cafe staff, unless they are of the Fawlty Towers variety, enjoy a chat too.

POINTS TO PONDER
I bet you love going to a cafe where staff know your name and you in turn get to know theirs. A smile and some engaging banter can go a long way in us showing our appreciation of each other.
Let your kind nature, actions and conversations show either at work or in your recreation places.
Being friendly gives someone an opportunity to be friendly back. We aren’t meant to be isolated from each other either in our families, neighbourhoods or communities.
