The ART of KINDNESS

I was admiring an artwork in my sister Jenny and brother in law Stuart’s home. Its tactile form invited a gentle touch. “There’s a back story to the artwork,” said Jenny. Intrigued and loving a good story, “Do go on,” I replied.
Jan the artist is a good friend of them both and worked with Stuart at Ormiston Junior College. (Auckland). Students and staff loved his craftsmanship which extended to set designs for school productions and his relaxed, informal teaching.
Jan wanted to celebrate his 70th birthday in a different way… He invited 100 of his friends and family to his art exhibition in Taupo. The not so typical venue was a farm barn. There was plenty of food (including a ‘pig on a spit’) and drinks. People were encouraged to talk about the artworks in small groups. Earnest discussion followed with Jan looking rather chuffed as he watched people enjoying themselves.
He then announced, “Go into the barn and choose a piece of art. It’s yours” People momentarily hesitated, unsure if they heard him properly. In an orderly way, everyone chose and everyone went away happy.
Jan told Jenny that he wanted to say thank you with a gift to everyone who had a significant influence in his life. He made enough so that even the last to select would still have a choice as he wanted it to be a version of a six year old party, where all the kids go home with a party bag.
Jan concluded that, ‘It’s an amazing thing to give to someone knowing they can’t repay or do anything in return and then watch them get excited about receiving’
What a wonderful celebration of life, relationships, thoughtfulness, generosity and kindness.

  1. What a heartwarming and unique way to celebrate a milestone! Jan's 70th birthday exhibition not only showcased his artistic talent but also his incredible generosity and deep appreciation for the people who had shaped his life. The setting of the farm barn, with its casual atmosphere, made the event feel personal and inviting, allowing guests to engage in meaningful conversations about the artwork. The true magic, however, was in Jan’s thoughtful gesture of gifting each person a piece of art. It’s a rare and beautiful thing to give without expectation of anything in return, and Jan’s desire to bring joy to others was evident in every detail. This act of kindness speaks volumes about the power of relationships and the joy of giving, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to attend. What a lovely reminder that some of life’s most precious moments are about sharing and connection, not material exchange.
